What’s Unique About Our Aesthetic Treatments For Cancer Patients?
As an aesthetic doctor providing this service, I feel the most important quality that I have is that I am a cancer survivor. If you would like to know a bit more about my personal experience, please read about my skin journey during cancer treatment.
I fully understand the physical and psychological needs that commonly occur to the skin as well as the importance of providing a “safe” space – safe in terms of the frequently sanitised physical environment which is important for immune-compromised patients, and comfortable in a place that patients can feel at ease about their condition.
Skin Changes
During cancer treatment, one’s skin goes through a lot of stress and may experience inflammation, acne, redness, irritation and dryness. The ultimate aim of the Aesthetician is to rebuild and restore the barrier function of the skin to promote the growth of new healthy skin cells in recovery.
Acne
Acne during cancer treatment is often caused by a combination of including chemotherapy, or other drugs given along with it such as steroids. Often choosing the correct skincare products and using topical or oral medications can help to treat the acne. There are however some treatments that can be done concurrently to further control and improve acne conditions.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS
A chemical peel clinically shown to reduce oiliness of the skin with minimal side effects of redness and peeling.
Number of Sessions & Downtime
4-6 sessions at least 4 weeks apart, 15 minutes each; Usually no downtime though some may have minor peeling that can last for a few days.
A non-invasive laser treatment that is effective in penetrating the skin safely, and selectively destroys overactive oil-producing glands that cause acne without damaging the skin surface.

3-6 sessions at least 3-4 weeks apart, 15 – 20 minutes each; There is little to no downtime.
Blue LED light treats acne by penetrating the pores and reducing activity in the sebaceous glands. Blue light may also kill acne-causing bacteria. As it does not contain ultraviolet rays, the light therapy is safe for regular use.

A non-invasive, 6-step procedure that uses a patented Vortex technology to deeply cleanse unwanted debris that clog the pores, while restoring skin’s protective barrier and delivering hydration.

- Oral Antibiotics & Isotretinoin
For moderate to severe acne, oral antibiotics like Doxycycline may be required to reduce bacteria that is causing the acne. This may be used in combination with other topical acne medication.
Isotretinoin (Oratane®), a derivative of vitamin A, works by cutting down the sebum produced by glands in your skin. It will also help to reduce bacteria, inflammation and open clogged pores.

As prescribed. You should diligently wear sunscreen as skin will be more sensitive to sun while on oral medications for acne.
Skin Dryness & / Dullness
Dryness of the skin can occur as a side effect of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. As a result the skin on the face may look dull and dehydrated with worsening of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A good daily moisturizer and cleanser is important to minimise these side effects.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS
A non-invasive, 6-step procedure that uses a patented Vortex technology to deeply cleanse unwanted debris that clog the pores, while restoring skin’s protective barrier and delivering hydration.

Once every 2 to 3 weeks, 30 minutes each; No downtime.
An anti-aging and skin healing injectable treatment containing Polynucleotide (PN), improves the skin by providing anti-inflammatory and wound healing mechanisms. This can help stimulate collagen, improve skin’s moisture level and restore damaged skin.

3 sessions 4 weeks apart, 60 minutes each
Tiny bumps may appear at injection sites which can take 12-24 hours to fully disappear. There may also be tiny purple or pink spots that can occur from the injections which may take 5-7 days to resolve.
Avoid excessive heat, sports and exercise a day after the treatment.
A minimally invasive injectable treatment that delivers hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the skin, directly into the dermis layer. HA attracts water to hydrate skin, improve skin elasticity and overall skin quality.

1 session every 9 months, 60 minutes each
Tiny bumps may appear at injection sites which can take 12-24 hours to fully disappear. There may also be tiny purple or pink spots that can occur from the injections which may take 5-7 days to resolve.

- Skinko-e Microneedling
This facial uses multiple micro-fine needles which reach between 0.5 and 2.5 millimetres into the skin to encourage skin healing and rejuvenation.
Viscoderm® Skinko E is an anti-ageing and antioxidant complex containing more than 50 dermofunctional elements including non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid, minerals, amino acids and vitamins.
Number of Sessions & Downtime
1-2 sessions each week, 60 minutes each.
Little to no downtime. There may be a bit of redness over the treated areas which will disappear within 24 hours.
Sylfirm X is an emerging dual wave system that uses pulsed radiofrequency waves to generate an electrothermal effect on the skin, accurately targeting damaged skin cells.
Sylfirm X is clinically proven to safely and effectively address a number of issues that are commonly faced by patients going through cancer treatment, including fine lines caused by dryness of skin, saggy skin, large pores and dullness.

3-6 sessions, 3 weeks apart, 60 minutes each; There is little to no downtime.
Pigmentation / Hyperpigmentation
There are certain chemotherapy and immunotherapy drugs that can cause darkening or pigmentation of the skin. This can occur 2 to 3 weeks after treatment starts and may go away approximately 10 to 12 weeks later after the treatment is over, although some can be permanent.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS
A safe pigment corrector formulated with 5% Cysteamine Hydrochloride and free of hydroquinone to address conditions of hyperpigmentation such as melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and freckles.
Number of Sessions & Downtime
Recommended to use daily as instructed for at least 12-16 weeks followed by a maintenance of once to twice weekly.
Some may experience mild side effects like redness, dryness and possibly irritation of the skin within the first few days of use.
A non-ablative laser that uses ultra-short pulses of 300 picoseconds to treat blemishes on the skin such as acne scars, enlarged pores, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

3-6 sessions, 3-4 weeks apart, 15 – 20 minutes each
Depending on the type of pigmentation treated it can range from minimal downtime to having darkened spots on the treated area which can last up to 7 to 10 days.

Saggy Skin
After the completion of your treatment, you may notice loss of elasticity and sagging of the skin. This may be more obvious in patients who experienced drastic weight loss during their treatment. While putting on weight helps, you may need an extra push at specific areas such as your jaws line, arms and tummy.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS
A non-invasive procedure that uses both ultrasound and radio frequency to deliver controlled heat to the skin to stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and firmness.
Number of Sessions & Downtime
2-4 sessions, 7-10 days apart, 15-30 minutes each.
No downtime. Skin may look flushed for up to 30 minutes after treatment.

Why Does a Cancer Patient Need Aesthetic Treatment?
When cancer treatment is given, one’s skin goes through a lot of stress and becomes more sensitive. Inflammation, redness, irritation, acne and dryness are some of the many symptoms that a cancer patient can experience in addition to the devastating hair loss side effect.
The ultimate aim of aesthetic treatment is to restore the barrier function of the skin and promote the growth of new healthy skin cells. Of course, the psychological part of the treatment is to have someone share part of the difficult and long journey ahead with you, to rebuild that confidence that may have been lost in the midst of your cancer treatment.
Some of the changes you undergo may just be temporary.

Hair Changes
This is one of the side effects feared by most cancer patients. Especially for ladies, losing their crown of glory is something even more significant as compared to the skin changes. Some chemotherapy drugs can cause hair to fall out. Hair usually begins to thin two to three weeks after chemotherapy starts; for most women it will begin to grow back one to two months after treatment ends. However, up to one-third of women will have persistent thinning or loss.
After treatment ends some patients may experience accelerated unwanted hair growth on their face and body.
Hair Loss
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT
- Calecim® Microneedling with Fotona laser treatment
This treatment includes the insertion of multiple micro-fine needles which reach between 0.5 and 2.5 millimetres into the skin to encourage skin healing and rejuvenation.
The Calecim® Professional Serum contains high concentrations of active stem cell proteins derived from cord lining to accelerate repair and renewal of skin cells.This, together with Fotona laser, stimulates dormant hair follicles and encourage hair growth.
This treatment may not be suitable for people with the following conditions:
- Susceptibility to hypertrophic scarring
- Severe skin irritation or allergies
- Seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis of the scalp

Excess Hair
RECOMMENDED TREATMENTS
It uses advanced technology over traditional IPL that harnesses powerful and precise laser sources to target shafts/roots of the hair, dramatically reducing hair growth and preventing new ones from growing.
Suitable for both men and women, it is a safe procedure that does not cause any damage to your skin.

4-10 sessions, 1-2 weeks apart, 15 – 30 minutes each; No downtime.
- Fotona Dynamis (FRAC3)
It delivers high-intensity Nd:YAG laser pulses in less than 2 milliseconds to destroy deep hair follicles while avoiding unnecessary damage to the epidermis. As such, it possesses the ability to permanently reduce hair from the very first session and hence will require considerably fewer sessions than IPL.

5-6 treatments, at 7-12 weeks interval, 30 – 60 minutes each.
Minimal to no downtime. Occasionally mild redness post-treatment may occur, which usually resolves a few hours after treatment.
General Body Changes
Muscle aches (Myalgia), fatigue and water retention are all possible side effects of cancer and its treatment.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT
Massage is effective in reducing symptoms such as stress, pain, anxiety, depression, nausea, swelling and fatigue in people who have had chemotherapy or surgery for cancer.
Modifications can be made to adapt the massage pressure or treatment position based on your cancer and treatment-related side effects. You should let our therapist know if you are actively having lymphoedema.
Recommended massages include Swedish massage, Aromatherapy massage, Thermal Meridien Massage.

Intimacy After Cancer
After cancer treatment patients may experience low sex drive, vaginal dryness and pain during sex. Shrinking and thinning of the vaginal wall can also occur and these are caused by lack of estrogen in the vaginal tissue as a result of the cancer treatment.
The cause very often may be a combination of both psychological blocks and physical changes to the body and our doctors can discuss your suitability for treatments of vaginal atrophy at our clinic. If needed a referral to a support group or therapist can be recommended where you can discuss and learn tips on how to deal with the challenges of intimacy after cancer treatment.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT
A painless laser treatment that serves to treat common female issues of urine leakage, vaginal looseness and dryness that often occur with hormonal imbalances. It tightens the vagina and relieves vaginal atrophy by stimulating new collagen which in turn relieve symptoms and restores the skin elasticity of the vaginal canal
