Ultherapy® is a non-surgical US FDA-approved treatment that uses focused ultrasound to lift, tighten and rejuvenate loose skin on the face, eyes, neck and chin and décolletage with little to no downtime.
Ultherapy® uses high intensity focused ultrasound to target the fibromuscular layer (also called the SMAS). It is a tough layer in the face and neck, and is rich in collagen and elastin.
Guided by real-time ultrasound imaging of the skin’s different layers, focused ultrasound energy can be delivered at precise depths below the surface of the skin, while leaving the top layers including the epidermis completely unaffected. This process heats up and contracts fibrous tissues to stimulate collagen and elastin production. The skin is firmer, less saggy, with fewer wrinkles.
Most patients will see improvement over the next 1-3 months after one treatment as new collagen forms. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the response of each patient and each area treated is variable. The effects often last up to 18 months and patients are advised to repeat the treatment every year for maintenance.
Ultherapy is an option for anyone concerned about skin laxity or looking to achieve tighter, toner skin. Saggy skin may be due to a combination of loss of elasticity and a loss of fat, hence a combined approach with other aesthetic treatments such as fillers, Profhilo®, or Sculptra® may bring about better results. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to improve the comfort level of the treatment which most patients are able to tolerate. During the procedure, a gel is applied before the transducer is placed over the treatment area. Patients may feel a warm prickly sensation beneath the skin when the ultrasound energy is being delivered into the target tissue.
Treatment takes approximately 45 minutes depending on the treatment area. You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and you can apply makeup if needed. Your skin may appear slightly flushed immediately after the treatment, but any redness should subside within a few hours.
