Screening for Colorectal Cancer - Epi ProColon®

Both men and women above the age of 50 years are encouraged to do yearly colorectal cancer screening which can aid in the early detection and treatment.

What is colorectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world amongst men and second most common cancer amongst women. In Singapore, men form 22% of the cancer diagnosis. For ladies, colorectal cancer ranks number two after Breast cancer and forms 17% of the cancer cases.

The colon is the longest part of the large intestine and the rectum is the last few inches of the large intestine before the anus. Polyps which are benign lumps may form on the inner wall of the colon and rectum. However, certain types of polyps may develop into cancer and should be removed if they are detected. This cancer is known as the cancer of the colon or rectum.

What are the risk factors?

  • Age (Over 50 years old)
  • Family history of colon or rectum cancer
  • Previous personal history of colon polyps
  • History of ulcerative colitis (ulcers in the lining of the large intestine or Crohn’s disease)
  • Smoker status
  • Diet high in fats and low in fruits and vegetables

What is Epi ProColon®?

Epi ProColon® offers a convenient way of detecting colorectal cancer. It is a PCR blood test that tests for colorectal cancer in adults of any age.
This PCR test detects a DNA named Methylated Septin 9 in your blood. This DNA is a colorectal cancer biomarker that is shed into the bloodstream from proximal and distal colon and rectal cancerous sites, making it a differential biomarker for the early detection of colorectal cancer.
Epi ProColon® is a HSA-approved PCR test.

How sensitive is Epi ProColon® in detecting colorectal cancer?

Epi ProColon® has a negative predictive value as high as 99.9%. This means that if the test result is negative, the person has a 99.9% probability of being colorectal cancer-free. The test sensitivity is also high at 81%, which means that 8 out of 10 people with colorectal cancer will test positive.

If your Epi ProColon® result is negative and you have no symptoms or risk factor (eg family history of colorectal cancer or personal history of colorectal polyp etc), you only need to repeat this test after 5 to 10 years.

If your Epi ProColon® result is positive, you are highly encouraged to do a colonoscopy as soon as possible.

Benefits of Epi proColon®

  • Non-invasive
  • No pre-test preparation is required
  • No stool handling
  • No dietary or medication restrictions

When can I receive my results?

You can receive your results within 7 working days.

Do I need to fast before my blood test?

No fasting is required for this PCR test.

What are the common symptoms to look out for?

  • A change in bowel habits, including diarrhoea or constipation
  • Presence of blood in stools
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort such as cramps, gas or pain

As these symptoms typically only surface during late stages, we would recommend early detection for a better prognosis.
