Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral infection that causes a painful rash with blisters in one area on the body.
The risk of shingles increases as you get older, commonly occurring in people over the age of 50. Shingles develops in about 10% of people who have had chickenpox at an earlier time in their lives. And shingles can occur more than once.
Although there's no cure for shingles, treatment is available to relieve the symptoms until the condition resolves. Most cases of shingles last around two to four weeks.
Shingrix is an FDA-approved vaccine for the prevention of Shingles. It’s given in two doses, with 2-6 months between doses. Shingrix is recommended for the following groups of individuals:
You can still get vaccinated with Shingrix even if you’ve had shingles. Although some people will develop shingles despite vaccination, the vaccine may reduce the severity and duration of it.
Symptoms of Shingles may include:
You shouldn’t receive the Shingrix vaccine if you:
Shingles can have complications that last long after the rash is gone, including pain that lasts long after the outbreak, called postherpetic neuralgia. It affects up to 1 in 5 people who get shingles.
Other complications include:
Someone with shingles can’t spread shingles to another person. However, one can catch chickenpox from someone with shingles if they haven’t had chickenpox before.
The blisters that form contain the varicella-zoster virus. If a person who has never had chickenpox makes direct contact with an open blister or something with the fluid on it, they can contract the virus and develop chickenpox.
If you have shingles, you’re contagious until the last blister has dried and scabbed over. To help prevent the virus being passed on, avoid sharing towels or flannels, swimming, or playing contact sports. You should also avoid work or school if your rash is weeping (oozing fluid) and can’t be covered. In the meantime, avoid high risk groups such as women who are pregnant, people with weak immune system and babies.
