Specialised Screening

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Screening for Colorectal Cancer

What is Colorectal Cancer?

The colon is the longest part of the large intestine and the rectum is the last few inches of the large intestine before the anus. Polyps which are benign lumps may form on the inner wall of the colon and rectum. However, certain type of polyps may develop into cancer and should be removed if they are detected. This cancer is known as the cancer of the colon or rectum.

Colorectal Cancer is the third most common cancer in the world amongst men and second most common cancer amongst women. In 2018, there were 1.8 million new cases diagnosed. Both men and women above the age of 50 years are encouraged to do yearly Colorectal Cancer screening which can aid in the early detection and treatment of polyps.

What is CRCProtect™?

CRCProtect™ is a non-invasive blood test for the early detection of colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions which detects and quantifies Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs).

CTCs are cells that are shed by the primary tumour into the bloodstream. Unlike Faecal Immunochemical Test which detects small amounts of blood in the faeces, CRCProtect™ detects as minute as 1 CTC per 10 billion blood cells to come up with the risk score of an individual having colorectal cancer.

Why CRCProtect™?

As CRCProtect™ is a non-invasive blood test, individuals may discuss with their doctors to have CRCProtect™ incorporated into their regular health screening. CRCProtect™ eliminates the need for bowel preparation associated with a screening colonoscopy and compliance issues associated with faecal immunochemical testing.

Who can benefit from CRCProtect™?
  • Individuals who are over 50 years of age
  • Individuals with strong family history of colon or rectum cancer
  • Individuals with personal history of colon polyps
  • Individuals with a history of ulcers in the large intestine lining or Crohn’s disease
  • Individuals who smoke or have a diet high in fats and low in fruits and vegetables

Stomach Cancer Screening

What is Stomach Cancer?

Stomach Cancer is also commonly known as Gastric Cancer and occurs when malignant cells form in the lining of the stomach. Stomach Cancer is the 5th most common cancer, with about a million new cases being diagnosed a year worldwide.

Often, patients with Stomach Cancer are diagnosed at late stages as early detection of stomach cancer is hampered by the lack of presenting symptoms until the cancer is in the advanced stage.

What is GASTROClear™?

GASTROClear™ is a MicroRNA based blood test used in the detection of Stomach Cancer before symptoms surface. MicroRNAs are actively secreted into the blood by tumour cells. They are disease specific and provide a real-time and direct indication of the existence, development and progression of a disease.
As such, GASTROClear™ determines the risk of having stomach cancer at the point of testing and assists the doctors in recommending a patient for gastroscopy, which involves inserting a thin tube with a camera into a patient’s stomach.

Who can benefit from GASTROClear™?

  • More than 55 years and above
  • With strong family history of colorectal cancer
  • With presence or history of Helicobactor Pylori bacteria infection
  • With existing stomach polyps
  • With long term stomach inflammation
  • Who are smokers
