On average, the scalp has 100,000 hairs that cycle through periods of growing, resting, falling out, and regenerating. An average adult sheds about 100 strands of hair a day which will not cause noticeable thinning of the hair on the scalp because new hair is growing at the same time.
But if the hair growth cycle is disrupted, or if a hair follicle is damaged, hair may begin to fall out more quickly than it is regenerated, leading to symptoms such as a receding hairline, hair falling out in patches, or overall thinning.
But hair loss does not happen overnight, it is a long and slow process that can take anywhere from a few short years to several decades.
Common hair loss treatments
Medication
This depends on the underlying reason for the hair loss, but there are also medication available for hair loss (eg Minoxidil, Finasteride)
Topical applications
There are currently many of these in the market but effectiveness of these applications differs depending on individuals. (eg Anthralin)
Laser treatment (also referred to as red light therapy and cold laser therapy)
It invigorates circulation and stimulation to encourage hair follicles to grow hair. However, results are inconsistent.
Hair Transplant
This involves the removal of hair from a part of the head that has hair and transplants it to a bald spot. Sedation is required in view and it does not reverse hereditary hair loss
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection
This method involves three-steps – drawing of blood, processing it and then injecting it into the scalp. However, this is currently not allowed in Singapore.
